Time to turn a page....or not?

Hello everyone.

No video to share yet, but I thought I would slip in a picture of what is coming next.  A quick and simple project that will add a touch of class to any miniature room and give it that lived in look.

Yep, next we are going to tackle books.

On another note, AM over at SouthHampton Grey (check him out http://southhamptongrey.blogspot.com/) was intrigued when I mentioned I had pink counters in my kitchen.  I am not sure if I would have picked pink, but they are original to the house and we really felt they fit the place so they stayed.  Plus, I'm not really afraid of color.   These are the countertops I am always doing my videos on.  So don't think you need to adjust the color on your monitors when you watch my videos cause the background really is pink.  :-)  And yep, that is the infamous Cuckoo clock you always hear ticking in the background. HAHA

The range hood and the incandescent bulbs really change the color above the stove, but you can see the true color on the section in front of the window.

We painted the dining room walls a very close shade to the countertops (just a bit darker).

Now, back to miniatures.  I need some suggestions from my friends on what you might like to see me do a video on.  I have lots of ideas, but it is always nice to get some hints about what is on people's minds.

Till later!

  1. I look forward to seeing you make books. I really want to learn something about making kitchen jars, I would also like to learn about painting techniques, such as how to get a good result when you want different materials to look old.
Thanks for showing how to do.
As for the color pink, then things of course have to be seen in context, and in too many years, life in 1-1 scala has been lived in too much white.

    1. Wyrna, I have some plans written down for painting techniques. Not sure what kind of kitchen jars you may have in mind, but I'll make a note and see what can be done. :-) I agree that too many people live with white walls. I think everyone needs some color in their lives!

    1. Thanks AM! I love showing off the new house we are working on. It is truly a dream and there are some other pics of it in a few of my earlier posts. I really need to put more tags on my posts. LOL
Thanks for the thumbs up on the photos. Hard to believe, but I take almost all my still photos with my iPhone. I will try and put together a post about taking pictures. Lighting is everything!

  3. Hello Dale,
I cannot wait for the book tutorial. They look wodnerful...and i still have a lot to make to fill my library! I love the colors in your home. It's so fresh and happy. I can't imagine anyone not smiling in that house!
Right now my biggest mission is making realistic ivy climbing over the loggia of my Manor. i want it to cover the structure and climb up the suide wall of the house.

    1. These books are super easy to make. The hardest part was putting the book covers together on one sheet so I could print them out. More about that later. :-)

They make an ivy leaf shaped paper punch. I think since you have so many I would start by glueing some various sizes of thread and wire onto the loggia and then punching out a bunch of ivy leaves from some paper that you have painted. Then just attach them to the "vines" like I showed in the video. Email me if you need more details. :-)

  5. Hi Dale,
I can hardly wait for the book video. GREAT idea.
Your house is beautiful. I personally love the colors. The space feels warm and cheerful and your cuckoo clock makes me smile.
For future videos?? So much that I would love to learn..
A roombox from start to finish would be a great series. I would love to see you complete your wonderful cottage/shop?
I joined the beautiful blog that you've suggested.
    Thank you!

    1. Morena, thank you so much for the kind words and I'm glad the cuckoo makes you smile. :-) It makes me smile also.

I received some items in the mail so hopefully I'll be doing some additional work on the shop soon. I also have been working on some plans for a roombox that should be a LOT of fun.

  7. Hi Dale, a tutorial about books sounds great! My wish for a tutorial would be a "How to work with paper clay" - I always see people achieving great results with it, but I don't dare to work with it because it's quite expensive in Germany. Your real home looks great with all those bright colours, very inspiring and bringing you into a good mood.

    Greetings

    1. Hi Birgit!

A paper clay tutorial? Oh my. I worked with it one time and it was a disaster. let me see what I can come up with and maybe we can learn together. :-)

  8. HI Dale, I am sooo happy that you are going to do a video on books! I love them as you are well aware and in miniature... I really LOVE them! Whether they are faux or with real pages, I'm in!
Re your pink counters; I think they are great! I'm 'all over'Vintage! I loveit! It always distresses me when I see classic character removed from a remodel to up-grade and in so doing all of what was charming and unique get trashed. The saying "they don't build them like they used to" is so true. There is nothing wrong with up-dating, but to my taste, let the beauty alone. Besides which, what is thrown away one year, is actively re-purchased and re-introduced later down the pike, only then you have to pay more for it. Everything old, can be New again!

    1. Thanks Elizabeth! I'm excited about doing the books, but I need to adjust the scale of the covers I created because they are coming out a bit big. They look good in the picture, but they won't fit in the bookcases I'm using them in. HAHA

I totally agree about the vintage look. I have always wanted a vintage/historic home and this one was my dream. We really tried to keep as much of the original finishes as we could and still adapt it for our use. Even when I decided to remove some panelling and walls, I used them elsewhere in the house and kept some for a future backyard project.

I can't wait to follow your tutorial on how to make books. As the previous messages say, your photos and explanations are just great.
A real treat to follow your blog.

  10. I also have a small library to fill and keep putting off learning how to make books-which is funny since I make my own journals in real life. Mini books intimidate me I think. I love your kitchen- which is strange because pink is my least favorite color. I think the reason it works for me is because you have painted your walls to work with it. I love people that fill their home with color. Just this small peek at your home makes me smile- it must be a nice place to work in :)
